Company History / Employee Bios

Shields Orthotic Prosthetic Services, Inc. was founded in 1965 by Earl V. Shields, CPO. Mr. Shields has devoted his professional life to improving the lives of his patients, and deeply cares about the quality of treatment extended to all patients of Shields O&P. He has developed our scoliosis program along with many other innovations used in our orthotic and prosthetic programs.

Our professional staff members have spent years obtaining their education, achieving professional certification, expanding their knowledge by attending continuing education programs, and obtaining the invaluable lessons that a combined experience of 80 plus years as practitioners has taught us.

We believe in utilizing a team approach to treating our patients. Over the past 45 years we have solved many unique fitting problems, and provided comfort to patients who have never known comfort before.  Our staff keeps current on all of the technologies available to our patients, which includes all age groups.  

We are preferred providers for virtually all insurance carriers, including Medicare, Medicaid, Workers Compensation Fund of Utah, the Veterans Administration, SelectHealth, Altius, Educators Mutual, PEHP, Blue Cross Blue Shield, DMBA, Aetna, Cigna, United HealthCare, as well as numerous other third party payers. Our office staff is very knowledgeable when it comes to working with insurance companies, and is always willing to answer and assist with any questions you might have. We make every effort to inform our patients of their financial responsibility prior to fabrication of their orthotic or prosthetic device.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between disability and normal life, hence our slogan “mobility solutions for life”. We have made it a point to keep current on all of the technologies available to our patients and continue to serve people in the Greater Salt Lake Area and the remainder of Utah, as well as the surrounding states of Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Office Staff

Erica Harwood - Salt Lake Receptionist

Erica has been with Shields O&P since 2001, having held multiple positions over the years. Erica’s responsibilities include helping patients with check in and paperwork, scheduling appointments, billing, and answering phones. Erica enjoys working closely with people and getting to know them. In her spare time she enjoys quilting, crafting, and boating.



Maria Kinsey - Insurance Billing & Authorizations

Maria's responsibilities include offering support to the insurance and billing departments as well as the reception area. She started with Shields O&P in 2010. Maria is originally from Mexico and is therefore fluent in Spanish. Maria thoroughly enjoys interacting with patients. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.



Shirley Penrod - Ogden Receptionist

Shirley has been with Shields O&P since 2004. Shirley is the receptionist at our Ogden office, and is responsible for helping patients with check in and paperwork, scheduling appointments, billing, and answering phones. Shirley loves meeting new people and getting to know our patients. In her spare time she enjoys sewing, crafts, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.



Gwen Schwarz - Insurance Billing & Authorizations / Collections

Gwen has been with Shields O&P since 1998. She has a vast amount of experience dealing with insurance companies, and is constantly working to ensure our patients are treated fairly. Some of Gwen’s hobbies and interests are camping, sewing, and traveling, and she loves dogs.

Practitioners

Mike Beavers - ABC Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist / CPO

Mike has been with Shields O&P since 1986, and originally began working as a technician focused on learning design and manufacturing techniques. These experiences led Mike to pursue further education at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, where he received his degree in Orthotics & Prosthetics in 1993. He returned to Shields O&P Services where he completed his residency in both disciplines. Mike has been on staff as a CPO caring for patients needs since 1994. Mike is married with three daughters and one grandson. In his free time, he enjoys camping and attending his daughter’s athletic events.



Jared Larson - ABC Certified Prosthetist & Orthotist / CPO

Jared is ABC certified in both Prosthetics and Orthotics, and has been with Shields since 2004. Jared earned his Bachelor’s of Science majoring in Biology in 1999 from Utah State University, and graduated from the Newington Certificate Program in Orthotics (2000) and Prosthetics (2002) in Connecticut. After graduation Jared worked in Connecticut for several years before joining Shields. He became ABC Certified in Orthotics in 2002, and ABC Certified in Prosthetics in 2004. In his free time Jared enjoys spending time with his family, and his three beautiful girls.

Technicians

Gary Parke - ABC Certified Prosthetic & Orthotic Technician / CTPO

Gary Parke, CTPO has been in the O&P industry since 1982 and has been with Shields since 2001. As an amputee, he brings a unique perspective with a broad range of technical skill and knowledge in the fabrication of all upper and lower extremity orthotic and prosthetic products. Gary takes great pride with attention to detail and quality of every device fabricated. He has competed nationally and internationally in snow skiing, water skiing, and volley ball, and was a member of the 1988 Paralympic team. He also volunteered as a water ski instructor for 9 years at a cancer camp for children. He is married with 4 children and his interests include hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.



Kevin Shields - O&P Technician / CPOA

Kevin started working for Shields O&P in 1984 and was trained in house by ABC Certified Prosthetists and Orthotists. Kevin specializes in spinal orthoses, custom fabricated carbon laminated lower extremity orthoses, and lower extremity prosthetics, and takes great pride in his quality of work and attention to detail. In his spare time Kevin enjoys the outdoors as well as spending time with his family, dogs, and cats.



Aaron Shields - O&P Assistant Technician

Aaron has been with Shields O&P since 2006. He received his training under the guidance and supervision of our skilled and experienced technicians. He is responsible for supporting the technicians, having become proficient in the tools, materials, and equipment utilized to fabricate, modify, and repair orthoses and prostheses. In his spare time Aaron enjoys spending time outdooors, and with his dogs and cats.


Management

Mary Riley - Patient Services Coordinator / CPOA

Mary's responsibilities include coordination of all services, ensuring there is a smooth line of communication between patients, staff, and administration, and ensuring that our company is current with all compliance and accreditation standards. Mary graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Medicine in 1965, and has been on staff with Shields O&P since 1968. Mary’s areas of particular professional interest include patient education, and participation in our scoliosis program. Away from work, Mary enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with “Suki” her Bengal cat.



Barbara Shields - Office Manager

Barbara started working for Shields O&P in 1974. She currently oversees reception, billing, insurance, human resources, and accounting. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1972 with a degree in physical therapy. Over the years she has recognized many advances in technology that have benefited our patients. Barbara feels it is a pleasure dealing with our patients and knowing that she has the opportunity to positively impact their lives. In her free time she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and dogs.
